About the TLU Writing Center

Location:
Blumberg Library CoLab (located on the 1st floor where the poster printers are)

What to Bring:
Please bring whatever work you have so far on the project.  In addition, if you're working on a paper for a class, bring the directions for the assignment.  If you haven't started writing yet, you're still welcome to come visit the writing tutors; we're happy to help writers get started on projects by practicing with them methods of invention, brainstorming, choosing a topic, and conducting research for projects that require it.
What to Expect:
We are not a remedial service or a proofreading service.  We do not "correct" students' writing.  Instead, our help is meant to foster independence, to show writers how to make good decisions about their own work.  We also work with any kind of writing for any class, not just English or Communication classes.
The service we provide is intended to help you become a better writer.  We don't, therefore, guarantee better grade, nor do we proofread or edit essays for you.  Instead, we are here to show you how you can invent, focus, revise, develop, proofread, and otherwise strengthen your own writing.  We focus on your goals and use the specific writing task at hand to practice strategies that meet those goals.  You should make sure you visit the writing tutors well in advance of your deadline so you can make whatever changes or revisions you and the tutor feel are necessary.  Visiting a tutor less than two hours before the paper is due will not work.

A Typical Consultation Goes Something Like This:
You go to the library CoLab where you will find a writing tutor at one of the tables with a “Writing Tutor” sign. You and the tutor will talk about your writing project, and determine your goals for the session. You will work together to achieve those goals. At the conclusion of the consultation, the tutor will ask if you would like us to send a note to your instructor about the consultation. Most consultations last about 30 to 45 minutes.
Confidentiality:
Your visit to the Writing Center remains confidential unless you give us permission to send a note to your instructor. Our notes merely describe what you and the tutor worked on during the consultation; we do not evaluate you or your work in any way.
